I just do not feel motivated to exercise.

I hear this frequently  “I just don’t feel motivated to exercise”.  Can you relate?

Think about it. What do you really want and what do you think is holding you back from taking action. What is your goal and why is that important to you?

In the picture above is my family checking out the gym with me while we were on vacation. Some of them worked out a couple times while we were there, others never went back. But that is ok, They did them, walking was the common movement for our vacation.

Like the NIKE slogan says “JUST DO IT”.  Avoid paralysis by analysis and just start with SOMEthing.  Truth is, if it’s important enough, you’ll find a way to do it. I believe it comes down to DECIDING that you are going to do it.  Instead of the voice in your head that gives you reasons NOT to do it, focus on the reasons why you CAN do it. You don’t always have to feel motivated to do something, but if you just start doing it anyway, before you know it, you’ve created a new habit and you feel great.

It goes without saying that if the reason you don’t feel motivated is that you feel run down and tired, that’s another story. If you know why you’re tired, I would focus on fixing that asap (getting adequate sleep, eating better, reducing stress, etc.).  If you aren’t sure of the cause, I would recommend seeing your doctor to check your nutrient levels, hormone levels, thyroid and adrenal function as well as other indicators to find out WHY you’re tired. If you can’t get through your day without caffeine, there’s a problem and finding out the cause now can get you on the road to feeling better.

Sometimes we get hung up with feeling self-conscious and that can hold us back. The truth is, people are more worried about how they look and what they’re doing than how you look, so who cares, right?? Just focus on why you are there. I remember feeling self-conscious when I would be at the gym working out in the area where all the guys hung out. I felt out numbered and out of place. I started going with my son and  his girlfriend Megan, became my gym buddy. It is good to have a partner, especially for accountability. Once I realized that I had just as much of a right to be there as they did, slowly I started to feel better about it and truth be told, I still feel that way at times. But we can not let that stop us from reaching our goals. Right?
